You have identified his name correctly. Several transmitters narrated this from Muḥammad.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shawdhub said: Zuhdam al-Jarmī told me, “I was spending an evening in conversation with Ibn ʿAbbās when he said, ‘Let me relate something to you. When what befell this man—meaning ʿUthmān—took place, I said to ʿAlī: “Withdraw from the matter. By Allah, even if you were hiding in a rocky cleft, people would still come to you until they pledged allegiance.” He ignored my counsel, and, by Allah, Muʿāwiyah will surely assume authority on his account, for Allah says: “Whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his heir authority; yet let him not exceed limits in killing, for he is indeed supported” (Q 17:33).’
Abū Qilābah al-Jarmī said: When news of ʿUthmān’s death reached Thumāmah ibn ʿAdī—who was governor of Ṣanʿā—he wept for a long time and then declared, “This is the moment the caliphate of prophethood has been taken from the community of Muḥammad and has become kingship and coercion: whoever overpowers something devours it.”
Yahyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī reported that Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī—one of the participants at Badr—said when ʿUthmān was killed, “O Allah, I bind myself before You never to laugh again until I meet You.”
Qatādah said: ʿUthmān ruled for twelve years, minus twelve days—and the same was stated by Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ and others.
