Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

A poetess of refined talent, generous and widely celebrated. She was the mother of the ḥadith scholar ʿAlī (1) ibn Fāḍil ibn Ṣamdūn. Among those she praised in verse were al-Silafī and Taqī al-Dīn, the ruler of Ḥamāh. Abū al-Qāsim ibn Rawāḥah transmitted a selection of her poetry. She passed away in 579 AH, at the age of seventy-six (2).

43 – Abū Ṭālib Aḥmad ibn al-Musallam ibn Rajāʾ al-Lakhmī *
The Imām and scholar of legal methodology, Abū Ṭālib Aḥmad ibn al-Musallam ibn Rajāʾ al-Lakhmī—also called Khalīfah, though the name Aḥmad prevailed—was among the learned figures of Alexandria.

…al-Masri, al-Kharida 2/221; Ibn Khallikan, Wafayat al-Ayan 1/297; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 78 (Topkapi Ahmet III 2917/14); al-Mushtabih 116; al-Ibar 4/237; Ibn al-Imad, al-Shadharat 4/265. Al-Jamal Ibn al-Sabuni likewise devoted to her an excellent biography in his Takmila, pp. 47–50. Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri, in the Takmila entry for her son Ali, writes: “Our shaykh al-Hafiz al-Maqdisi and others transmitted from her, and our shaykh al-Hafiz Abu al-Hasan praised her frequently.” Her father, Abu al-Faraj Ghayth b. Ali al-Suri, known as Ibn al-Armanazi, was preacher of Sur and a distinguished scholar. He heard hadith from several masters and narrated them; his teacher Abu Bakr al-Khatib preserved two of his verses. We add that this Ghayth died in 509/1115 (al-Ibar 4/18 and other sources). (1) He died in 603/1206 and is well known; see al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, vol. 18, part 1, p. 137 (ed. Bashshar). (2) So reads the manuscript. Al-Ibar, however, states: “She lived seventy-four years,” which is correct, for al-Silafi records that she was born in Muharram 505/1111, as likewise reported by Ibn al-Sabuni in the Takmila, by al-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam, and by Ibn Khallikan in the Wafayat. (*) Al-Dhahabi also gives him a brief notice under the name “Khalifa” in Tarikh al-Islam, among those who died in 578/1182 (fol. 75, Ahmet III 2917/14).
