Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Balkhī. Abū al-ʿAlāʾ gave no date for his passing. He remained alive until roughly the year 105 AH, and his son transmitted hadith from him.

40 – Ibn Ṣābir ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad al-Sulamī *
The shaykh, Abū al-Maʿālī ʿAbd Allah, son of the hadith scholar ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ṣābir al-Sulamī, of Damascus, the son of Sayyidah.

Born: 499 AH.

His father arranged for him to hear hadith from al-Sharīf al-Nasīb, Abū Ṭāhir al-Ḥinnāʾī, ʿAlī ibn al-Mawāzīnī, and several others.

Al-Samʿānī (1) said: “Abū al-Maʿālī was a young man who had come from Baghdad on a trading journey. I heard from him al-Murūʾa by al-Ḍarrāb.”

Ibn Ṣaṣrā remarked: “He sold his father’s and his uncle’s books for a trifling sum, and in mid-life he turned away from virtue; later he repented. He died in Rajab, 576 AH.”

I add: Among those who narrated from him were the hadith master ʿAbd al-Ghanī, Shaykh al-Muwaffaq, and al-Bahāʾ ʿAbd

(*) Al-Dhahabi provides him with an entry in: Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 66 (Topkapi Ahmed III 2917/14); al-Ibar, 4/229; and Ibn al-Imad, Shadharat, 4/256. The notice is absent from Ibn al-Dubaythi’s Tarikh (Paris MS 5922), but a brief extract survives in the epitome that al-Dhahabi made of that work (al-Mukhtasar al-muhtaj ilayh, 2/146). (1) Mentioned in the Dhayl Tarikh Baghdad, a continuation that has not reached us; Ibn al-Dubaythi alludes to it in his own Tarikh. Ibn al-Sam‘ani records, under “al-Darrab” in al-Ansab, that he heard the book al-Muru’a by al-Darrab, remarking: “Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. Isma‘il al-Darrab, an Egyptian, was prolific in hadith and rather headstrong; so stated Ibn Makula. I myself heard his book al-Muru’a.”
