7 – al-Ḥadīthī, Abū Ṭālib Rawḥ ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad*
Chief Judge Abū Ṭālib Rawḥ ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥadīthī, later al-Baghdādī, a Shafiʿi.
He was born in 502 AH.
Among those from whom he heard ḥadīth were Ismāʿīl ibn al-Faḍl al-Jurjānī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī al-Bajalī, and Hibat Allah ibn al-Ḥusayn.
(1) Ibn al-Dubaythi states in his History: “Our shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Akhdar spoke of him, praised him, transmitted his reports in his own works, and related them to us.”
(2) Ibn al-Dubaythi does not give his date of birth or death. We found both in the manuscript margin, written by the hadith scholar ʿAbd al-ʿAzim al-Mundhiri, quoting his shaykh Abu al-Barakat al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Hibat Allah al-Shafiʿi—the same authority cited by Ibn al-Najjar. Ibn al-Najjar records: “I heard ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Dimashqi in Baghdad say: I heard Abu al-Fadl ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-ʿUlaymi say: When my brother was in Baghdad attending hadith, he pledged to the sharif Abu al-Hasan al-Zaydi and to Sabih al-Nasri that he would endow his books and fascicles to them and dispatch them so that they would remain in their library in Baghdad. When he fell ill with the sickness that brought about his death, he entrusted me with fulfilling this pledge. After his passing I sent the collection to the Zaydi mosque. I”—continues Ibn al-Najjar—“arrived in Baghdad after al-Zaydi had died; Sabih received the books, and they are now in the Zaydi library.” (folio 133, Paris). Ibn al-Dubaythi reports the same incident.
(*) Further biographical notices are found in Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Muntazam; Ibn al-Dubaythi (folio 51, Paris 5922); al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam (folio 35, Ahmed III 2917/14) and his abridgement al-Mukhtasar al-Muhtaj Ilayh; Muhyi al-Din al-Qurashi, al-Jawahir al-Mudiyya; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya; and al-ʿAyni, ʿAqd al-Juman (16/folio 574). Ibn al-Jawzi, quoted by Badr al-ʿAyni, adds that he was reproached for rafd (Shiʿite leanings).
