Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadhānī passed away there (1) in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 569 AH; he was a little over eighty years old.
In that same year died: the ruler of Syria, King Nūr al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Zankī the Turk, at slightly more than fifty years of age; the musnid Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Muʿammar al-ʿAlawī, the naqīb of Baghdad; Abū al-Ḥasan Dahbal ibn ʿAlī ibn Kārih al-Ḥarīmī; the grammarian Abū Muḥammad Saʿīd ibn al-Mubārak ibn al-Dahhān al-Baghdādī; the Musnid of the Maghrib, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥunayn (2) al-Kinānī (3), in Fez, at the age of ninety-three; the musnid Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Narsī; Abū Isḥāq ibn Qurqūl al-Ḥamzī; Abū Tamīm Salmān ibn ʿAlī al-Raḥabī the baker; ʿAbd al-Nabī ibn al-Mahdī, the Kharijite who had seized control of Yemen; the jurist ʿUmārah ibn ʿAlī al-Yamanī, the foremost poet of his day; and Abū Shujāʿ Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Mādarāʾī, the chamberlain.
Among ḥāfiẓ Abū al-ʿAlāʾ’s children were several distinguished scholars; the youngest of them was the itinerant ḥāfiẓ
…in the chapter “Reports concerning the Children of Israel,” and in the Book of Manners (10/434) under the heading “If you feel no shame, do as you wish.” Abu Dawud (no. 4797) and Ibn Majah (no. 4183) also record it through the isnad of Mansur ibn al-Muʿtamir – Rabiʿi ibn Hirash – Abu Masʿud ʿUqbah al-Badri, who related that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Among the sayings that people have preserved from the earliest prophetic teachings is: ‘If you feel no shame, then do as you wish.’ ”
Al-Hafiz comments on the phrase “from Abu Masʿud”: “This is the sound wording.”
Ibrahim ibn Saʿd transmitted it from Mansur, by way of ʿAbd al-Malik, with the wording: “from Rabiʿi ibn Hirash, from Hudhayfah,” as cited by al-Daraqutni in al-ʿIlal. Abu Malik al-Ashjaʿi likewise narrated it from Rabiʿi, from Hudhayfah.
Al-Hafiz adds: “It is not unlikely that Rabiʿi heard the hadith from both Abu Masʿud and Hudhayfah.”

(2) The copyist’s pen slipped and wrote it as “Husayn”; the correct form, which will appear below, is well known.
(3) Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 4/1327, reads “al-Kattani,” a scribal mistake.
