—Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadhānī informed us in a written communication; Abū ʿAlī the Qurʾān-reciter informed us; Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Khallād related to us; Muḥammad ibn Ghālib related to us; al-Qaʿnabī, from Mālik, from Khubayb (1) ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ḥafṣ ibn ʿĀṣim, from Abū Saʿīd—or from Abū Hurayrah—said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Seven types of people will be shaded by Allah in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His: a just ruler …,” and he mentioned the remainder of the ḥadīth (2).
—Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; Naṣr ibn ʿAbd al-Razzaq informed us; the ḥāfiẓ Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadhānī narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Hāshimī informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar informed us; Abū Baḥr Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan related to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Faḍl al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn told us; Abū Mālik al-Ashjaʿī Saʿd ibn Ṭāriq, from Ribʿī (3), from Ḥudhayfah, said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Every act of goodness is charity, and the last remnant of Prophetic wisdom that has lingered since the Age of Ignorance is this: If you feel no shame, then do as you wish.” (4)
(1) The letter kha’ is read with a damma, and the following ba’ with a fatha; see al-Mushtabih, p. 215.
(2) Shuaib says: “A youth who has grown up in the worship of Allah Almighty; a man whose heart is attached to the mosque—when he leaves it he longs to return; two men who love one another for Allah’s sake, meeting and parting on that basis; a man who remembers Allah in private so that his eyes overflow with tears; a man whom a woman of lineage and beauty invites [to sin] and he replies, ‘I fear Allah’; and a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends.”
Malik narrated it in the Muwattaʾ 3/127–128 (Suyuti’s commentary) through Khubayb b. ʿAbd al-Rahman with this chain; through Malik it is also in al-Tirmidhi (2391). Al-Bukhari recorded it under nos. 660, 1423, 6479 and 6806; Muslim under 1031; and al-Nasaʾi 8/222—all of them through ʿUbayd Allah b. ʿUmar from Habib.
(3) Pronounced with a kasra on the first letter and a sukun on the ba’, as in Taqrib 1/243 and elsewhere.
(4) Shuaib comments: its chain is sound; Abu Malik al-Ashjaʿi is Saʿd b. Tariq. Ahmad included it in the Musnad 5/405, and al-Khatib in his Tarikh 2/135–136 through Yazid b. Harun with this chain. Al-Bukhari also reported it—without the clause “every good deed is charity”—6/380, in the Book of the Prophets =
