(1) Yaqut vocalises the word with a short “i” on the letter z, whereas al-Samani gives it a short “a”. We have preferred the latter, a choice further supported by Marasid al-Ittila, which also reads it with a fatha. In any case, al-Samani was the better informed about that region. (2) He is Ahmad ibn al-Fadl ibn Shabana al-Hamadhani, the scribe; al-Dhahabi lists him in al-Mushtabih, p. 386. (3) Pronounced with a fatha on both the plain s and l; it is a well-known city in Adharbayjan, as stated by Yaqut and by Marasid al-Ittila. (4) The town is also called Sabur-khwas(t); it lies between Khuzistan and Isfahan. Yaqut and the author of Marasid record both forms in their geographical dictionaries. (5) In the base manuscript the word appears with a fatha on both k letters, whereas Yaqut vocalises them with a kasra, a view followed by Ibn Abd al-Haqq in his Marasid. They describe the locality as a small town situated between Hamadhan and Qirmisin.
