“I have laid aside for my Lord ten qualities: I am the fourth of the first four people to enter Islam; I have never sung or entertained idle wishes; since the day I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with this right hand, I have never allowed it to touch my private parts; no Friday has passed me since I embraced Islam without my setting a slave free—unless I had none to manumit at the time, in which case I freed one later; and I have never committed fornication, whether in the era of ignorance or after Islam.”
Ibn ʿUmar narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “We liken ʿUthmān to our forefather Abraham, peace be upon him.” A similar report is attributed to ʿĀʾishah, if its chain is sound.
Abū Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met ʿUthmān at the door of the mosque and said, “O ʿUthmān, this is Gabriel informing me that Allah has married you to Umm Kulthūm for the same dowry as Ruqayyah and on the same terms of companionship.” Ibn Mājah recorded it.
It is related—from Anas or another Companion—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Is there not a father of an unmarried woman, is there not a brother of an unmarried woman, who will marry her to ʿUthmān? I have already married him to two of my daughters; had I possessed a third I would have given her to him. I married him only by revelation from heaven.”
Al-Ḥasan said, “ʿUthmān was called Dhū’l-Nūrayn (‘the Man of the Two Lights’) because we know of no one besides him who closed his door upon two daughters of a prophet.”
