Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I have never seen anyone more virtuous than he, and in the eastern lands I have met no one superior to Abū Muḥammad al-ʿUthmānī—none more ascetic, none more scrupulous.

I (the author) add: He compiled those fawāʾid (1) in the year 514 AH, related them at that time, and continued to do so thereafter. His father was counted among the scholars of the frontier.

375 – Ibn Bunaymān, Muḥammad ibn Bunaymān ibn Yūsuf al-Hamadhānī *

The shaykh, scholar, man of letters, pious and long-lived elder, Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn Bunaymān ibn Yūsuf al-Hamadhānī—the muʾadhdhin and tutor, and the maternal grandson of the ḥadith master Ḥamd ibn Naṣr al-Aʿmash.

He heard hadith from his grandfather; ʿAbdūs ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbdūs; al-Sallār Makkī ibn Manṣūr al-Karajī; al-Ḥasan ibn Yāsīn; Saʿd ibn ʿAlī al-ʿIjlī, the mufti; Muḥammad ibn Jāmiʿ al-Jawharī al-Qaṭṭān; and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥamd al-Dūnī. In his library were al-Mujtabā and ʿAmal Yawmin wa-Layla by Ibn al-Sunnī, both transmitted through al-Dūnī.

Among those who narrated from him are the ḥadith master Abū al-Mawāhib ibn Ṣaṣrā, Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad al-Shīrāzī, Ṣāliḥ ibn al-Muʿazzim, Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Karābīsī, Aḥmad ibn Ādam al-Karābīsī, and others.

Al-Samʿānī (2) said: “He is Abū al-Faḍl al-Ushnānī—a cultured and excellent shaykh, of fine conduct, trustworthy, dignified, courteous, and pious, and he transmitted a large amount of hadith.”
