during the Battle of Badr so that he might nurse her through her illness. She passed away a few nights after the battle, yet the Prophet ﷺ allotted him his full share of the spoils and reward from Badr. He then married him to the second daughter, Umm Kulthūm.
His son ʿAbd Allāh died at the age of six in the fourth year after the Hijrah.
According to what has reached us, ʿUthmān was of medium height—neither tall nor short—handsome of face, with a large beard, brown-skinned, broad-boned, and wide-shouldered. He used to dye his beard a yellowish color, and he had bound some of his teeth with gold.
Abū ʿAbd Allāh, the freedman of Shaddād, said: “I saw ʿUthmān giving a sermon while wearing a thick waist-wrapper that cost four dirhams and a reddish Kufan mantle. He was lean of build, long-bearded, and handsome of face.”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥazm said: “I saw ʿUthmān, and I have never seen—male or female—anyone with a more beautiful face than his.”
Al-Ḥasan said: “I saw him, and on his face were the marks of smallpox, while the hair of his arms was so long that it covered them.”
Al-Sāʾib said: “I saw him applying a yellow dye to his beard; I have never seen an elder more comely than he.”
Abū Thawr al-Fahmī said: “I came to ʿUthmān, and he said, ‘Indeed…’”
