The Biographical Entry for Dhu al-Nūrayn ʿUthmān, may Allah be pleased with him:
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ ibn Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Shams—Commander of the Believers—was known by the kunyas Abū ʿAmr and Abū ʿAbd Allāh and belonged to the Umayyad branch of Quraysh.
He narrated hadith from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and from the two shaykhs (Abū Bakr and ʿUmar).
Al-Dānī said: He recited the entire Qurʾān before the Prophet, peace be upon him. In turn, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, al-Mughīrah ibn Abī Shihāb, Abū al-Aswad, and Zirr ibn Jiysh recited it before him.
Those who transmitted from him include his sons Abān, Saʿīd, and ʿAmr; his freedman Ḥumrān; Anas; Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl; al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays; Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib; Abū Wāʾil; Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb; ʿAlqamah; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī; Mālik ibn Aws ibn al-Ḥadathān; and many others besides them.
He was one of the earliest converts, the possessor of the two lights, the man of the two migrations, and the husband of the two daughters. He accompanied ʿUmar to al-Jābiyah. He married Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, before the revelation began; she bore him ʿAbd Allāh, by whom he was called Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and he was also known as Abū ʿAmr.
His mother was Arwā bint Kurayz ibn Ḥabīb ibn ʿAbd Shams, whose mother was al-Bayḍāʾ bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim. He emigrated with Ruqayyah to Abyssinia, and the Prophet—may Allah bless her—left him behind
