(1) The base manuscript spells the word with the dotted ghayn, and the same reading appears in Sunan Ibn Majah (no. 311) where Uqbah b. Suhban reports that he heard Uthman b. Affan say: “Since I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah I have never sung, never pretended (tamannaytu), and never touched my private part with my right hand.” Lisan al-arab, quoting Ibn al-Athir’s al-Nihaya, likewise records: “I have never sung, never pretended, nor drunk wine—whether in the Jahiliyya or in Islam.” In the printed edition of al-Nihaya the word was misread as “taghayt.” Al-Muhibb al-Tabari explains taghanaytu in Riyad al-nadr as deriving from ghina (singing), i.e., the melodious chanting known among people of amusement; al-Sindi gives the same explanation in his marginalia on Ibn Majah, 1/131. The phrase ma tamannaytu means “I have never lied.” See Lisan al-arab and al-Nihaya under the root m-n-y. (2) Hand-written copy in the Zahiriya Library, majmuʿ no. 9; see al-Albani, al-Muntakhab min makhtutat al-hadith, p. 80. (3) Ibn ʿAsakir’s work, p. 36, reads up to the word “fadl.” (4) Muʿjam al-buldan, 4/469, vocalises the name with a doubled yaʾ following a sin; in Ibn ʿAsakir, p. 36, it is printed as “Susa” without the yaʾ, even though the source he cites includes it.
