Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

from me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the day I embraced Islam, and he never looked at me without smiling. (1)

Nūr al-Dīn’s tomb, located within his own madrasa near the Gate of the Courtiers, is still visited. (2)

After him, his son al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ (3) ruled for only a few months. He surrendered Damascus to Sultan Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn, withdrew to Aleppo, governed it for nine years, and died of colic at the age of twenty. He was a devout young man—may Allah have mercy on him.

341 – Ḥafadah, Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad ibn Asʿad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī

The shaykh, jurist, erudite scholar, preacher and imam, Majd al-Dīn Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad ibn Asʿad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ṭūsī, al-ʿAṭṭārī (4), a Shāfiʿī known as Ḥafadah.

He studied jurisprudence in Merv under Imam Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Samʿānī, and in Ṭūs.

…and Ibn Hibban declared the report sound (no. 501): “Do not underrate any act of kindness, even if it be that you empty your bucket into the vessel of one who seeks water, or that you speak to your brother with a cheerful face.” Muslim likewise relates it (no. 2626) on the authority of Abu Dharr, who said that the Prophet ﷺ told him: “Do not think little of any good deed, even if you meet your brother with a smiling face.” (1) Reported by Bukhari (no. 3822), Muslim (no. 2475), and Tirmidhi (nos. 3820, 3821); also in the Musnad 4/190–191, Tirmidhi (no. 3645), and Sharh al-sunnah (no. 3350), all on the authority of al-Harith b. Jaz’ who said: “I never saw anyone who smiled more than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Muslim (no. 2322) likewise transmits from Jabir b. Samurah: “He ﷺ would not leave the place where he had prayed the dawn prayer until the sun had risen; when it rose he would depart, and the Companions would converse about matters of the pre-Islamic days, laughing, while he ﷺ would only smile.” (2) A mosque bearing his name was later built next to the grave; it still stands today in the Tailors’ Market of Damascus.
