Ibn al-Farrāʾ informed us, Ibn Qudāmah informed us, and Abū Muḥammad ibn al-Khashshāb informed us … whereupon he related a ḥadith.
338 – al-Ṣaydalanī, al-Qāsim ibn al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid
The venerable shaykh, scholar, ḥadith authority, and principal musnid of Isfahan: Abū al-Muṭahhar al-Qāsim ibn al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn al-Faḍl al-Iṣfahānī, known as al-Ṣaydalanī.
He was born in the early 470s AH.
He studied under Rizq Allah al-Tamīmī; the dignitary Abū ʿAbd Allah ath-Thaqafī; Makkī ibn Manṣūr al-Karjī; Sulaymān ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḥāfiẓ; his maternal grandfather Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd ar-Razzāq; and many others.
Transmitters who narrated from him include Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Janzī (1)—later of Isfahan through the Musnad al-Shāfiʿī—al-Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Qādir ar-Ruhāwī, Abū Nizār Rabīʿah ibn al-Ḥasan al-Yamanī, Muḥammad ibn Masʿūd ibn Abī al-Fatḥ al-Madīnī, Muḥammad ibn Abī Saʿīd ibn Ṭāhir, Muʿāwiyah ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl, and others; from the senior generation, Abū Saʿd al-Samʿānī.
By way of ijāzah (written authorization) he was also transmitted from by Shaykh Muwaffaq ad-Dīn al-Maqdisī, Karīmah bint al-Ḥabaqbaq, and ʿAjībah.
Al-Samʿānī remarked, “He was distinguished, zealous in the pursuit of hadith, had an elegant hand, and listened with great thoroughness.”
I add: He likewise enabled his long-lived son, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī al-Muṭahhar, to narrate a great many traditions.
