I (the author) say: Among the great masters there is none to whom more spiritual states and karāmāt (miraculous gifts) are ascribed than Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir; yet many of these reports are not authentic, and some even contain impossibilities.
Al-Jubbāʾī related that Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir used to say, “Creation is the veil that screens you from your own soul, and your soul is the veil that screens you from your Lord.”
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir lived for ninety (1) years and returned to Allah on the tenth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir in the year 561 AH. An innumerable multitude followed his funeral, and he was laid to rest in his madrasa—may Allah Most High have mercy on him.
In that same year passed away:
• Abū al-Maḥāsin Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Shahrayār al-Iṣbahānī, who had heard ḥadith from Rizq Allah al-Tamīmī;
• the distinguished ḥadith scholar Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad al-Ashīrī (2) al-Maghribī—he was buried outside Baalbek;
• the leading imām Abū Ṭālib ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAjamī (3), endower of the madrasa in Aleppo;
• ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Harastānī (4), transmitter of the Juzʾ al-Rāfaqī;
• Abū Rashīd Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Iṣbahānī al-Bāghbān;
• Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Rustumī (5);
• Abū Ṭāhir Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥuṣnī al-Shāfiʿī (6) in Damascus;
• the judge Muhadhdhab al-Dīn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Rashīd ibn al-Zubayr al-Uswānī, the poet, brother of al-Rashīd Aḥmad (7);
• and Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Rawāḥa al-Anṣārī al-Ḥamawī.
