Year 22 AH
• In this year Azerbaijan was brought under Muslim authority by al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, according to Ibn Isḥāq; it is said that he reached a settlement with its people for eight hundred thousand dirhams.
• Abū ʿUbaydah, however, reports that the conquest was led by Ḥabīb b. Maslamah al-Fihrī with the Syrian forces, assisted by troops from Kūfah—Hudhayfah being among them—and that the region was taken by storm after fierce fighting. Allah knows best.
• During the same year Hudhayfah campaigned against the city of Dīnawar, captured it by force, although it had previously been taken by Saʿd and had later broken away.
• He then marched on Māh Sindān and likewise seized it by storm. There is a difference of opinion regarding Māh: some say Saʿd had conquered it earlier and that its people subsequently revolted.
• Ṭāriq b. Shihāb relates: “The people of Baṣrah mounted an expedition against Māh, and the Kufans—commanded by ʿAmmār b. Yāsir—came to their aid. The Kufans wished to share in the booty, but the Basrans refused. ʿUmar then wrote to them: ‘The spoils belong to those who were present at the engagement.’”
• Abū ʿUbaydah adds that Hudhayfah next advanced on Hamadhān, captured it by force—no previous conquest had taken place there—and that with Hamadhān Hudhayfah’s campaigns came to an end. All this occurred in the same year, 22 AH.
• Another view holds that Hamadhān was conquered by al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah in 24 AH, while yet another states that Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh took it on al-Mughīrah’s orders.
• Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ records that in this same year ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ captured Tripoli.
