—the people of Media, the people of Isfahan, the people of Hamadhan, and those of Rayy, Qumis, Nihawand, and Azerbaijan. When this reached ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—he consulted the Muslims. ʿAli—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “You are the best among us in judgment and the one who knows your subjects best.” ʿUmar replied, “I shall place in command a man who will be the first to meet the enemy’s lances. O Sāʾib, take this letter of mine to al-Nuʿmān ibn Muqarrin: he is to march with two-thirds of the people of Kufa and summon assistance from the people of Basra. You shall be in charge of whatever booty they obtain. If al-Nuʿmān is killed, Hudhayfah will take command; if Hudhayfah is killed, then Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allah; and if that entire force is destroyed, I do not wish to see you again.”
ʿAlqamah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Muzani relates, on the authority of Maʿqil ibn Yasār, that ʿUmar consulted al-Hurmuzān about Isfahan, Fars, and Azerbaijan, asking which he should strike first. Al-Hurmuzān said, “Commander of the Believers, Isfahan is the head, and Fars and Azerbaijan are the two wings. If you cut off one wing, the head will lean toward the other, but if you cut off the head, both wings will fall.” ʿUmar then entered the mosque and found al-Nuʿmān ibn Muqarrin praying; he dispatched him, together with al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, ʿAmr ibn Maʿdīkarib, al-Ashʿath ibn Qays, and ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar. Al-Nuʿmān marched until he reached Nihawand. The narrative continues: when the two armies met, al-Nuʿmān declared, “If I am killed, let no one turn back because of me. I am about to call upon Allah; say ‘āmin.’” He prayed, “O Allah, grant me martyrdom while granting the Muslims victory and conquest.” They said āmin, charged, and al-Nuʿmān was the first to fall.
Khalīfah reports, with his chain of transmission, that the armies met at Nihawand on Wednesday, and the Muslims’ right flank was pushed back somewhat. They fought again on Thursday; the right held firm while the left flank broke. They clashed a third time on Friday, and al-Nuʿmān addressed them, urging a decisive charge. Allah then granted them victory.
