Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

of Ghazna, appointing his brother Sayf al-Din Sam ibn al-Husayn to administer it. Bahram Shah later confronted both him and Sam; Sam was killed, and Bahram Shah re-established his rule, which he maintained until his death. Khusraw then succeeded to the throne.

The ruler of Ghur, Alaʾ al-Din Husayn—styled al-Malik al-Muʿaẓẓam—marched against him, whereupon Khusraw fled to Nihāwar. Alaʾ al-Din Husayn entered Ghazna, plundered it, and the peoples submitted to him. He placed his nephews Ghiyath al-Din and Shihab al-Din, the two sons of Sam, in charge; they soon consolidated their power and assumed sovereignty. They fought their uncle, defeated him, subdued him, and captured him, yet honored him, returned him to his kingdom, and continued in his service. He married each of them to one of his daughters and designated them both as his heirs-apparent. This arrangement endured until his death in 556 AH.
