him and said, “Master, the Prophet ﷺ stated, ‘Whoever’s last words are There is no god but Allah will enter Paradise.’ (1)”
At this he lifted his gaze to him and recited, “Would that my people knew how my Lord has forgiven me and made me one of the honored!” (Ya Sīn 26–27). He and all those present were struck with amazement. He continued reciting until he had completed the entire surah, repeating, “Allah, Allah, Allah.”
He passed away while seated on his prayer rug.
Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi (2) said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Takritī, the Sufi, narrated to me, “I propped him against my chest, and the last words he uttered were: ‘Would that my people knew how my Lord has forgiven me and made me one of the honored,’ and then he died.”
I say: He arrived in Baghdad in Shawwāl, remained there for one year and one month, and had with him his original manuscripts, from which he taught and transmitted.
Ibn al-Najjār said: The vizier Abū al-Muẓaffar ibn Hubayra summoned him, sent him an allowance, lodged him with him, honored him, and brought him into his assembly. He listened to the Sahih from him in a public session to which the people were admitted, the crowd exceeding all reckoning. Afterwards, Abū Muḥammad ibn al-Khashshāb read it to him at the Niẓāmiyya, and another large audience attended, though smaller than the first.
