ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Tawbah al-Kushmīhanī, the Marwazī.
He heard a complete recital of Sahih al-Bukhārī from Abū Jaʿfar al-Hamadhānī, who read it before the long-lived Abū al-Khayr Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿImrān al-Ṣaffār, in 471 AH. He also studied under Imam Abū al-Muẓaffar ibn al-Samʿānī, Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Mīhanī the gnostic, and Hibat Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith.
He was born in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, 461 AH.
Those who narrated from him include his son Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad, Sharīfah bint Aḥmad al-Ghāzī, Masʿūd ibn Maḥmūd al-Manīʿī, ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Abī Saʿd al-Samʿānī, and others.
ʿAbd al-Raḥīm said, “I heard the Ṣaḥīḥ from him twice.”
Abū Saʿd (1) said: “He was the leading shaykh of Marw in his day. He studied jurisprudence with my grandfather and married into his family. To me he was like a father—of upright conduct, learned, generous, and hospitable to strangers.”
He passed away on the twenty-third of Jumādā I, 548 AH.
In that same year there also died Ibn al-Ṭalāyah (2) and Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad ibn Munīr al-Raffāʾ, the poet.
