He was born in Acre and raised in Caesarea (1). He later settled in Damascus, where he sang the praises of kings and was appointed to oversee the clocks at the gate of the congregational mosque (2) during the days of Tāj al-Mulūk. After that he moved to Aleppo and was put in charge of its library.
He studied literature, mastered astronomy and geometry, and kept company with the poet Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn al-Khayyāṭ (3).
Among his own verses are the following:
O crescent gleaming in the twilight—
spare my eyelids the anguish of sleeplessness!
Release my heart, O tormentor of it—
it seethes with anger on account of your tresses. (4)
Al-Samʿānī said: “Of all those I met in Syria, he was the finest poet. He was born in the year seventy-eight…"
