Saʿd ibn ʿUbayd al-Awsi. Anas ibn Mālik’s remark, “He was one of my uncles,” disproves the claim that the man in question was Saʿd ibn ʿUbayd, for the latter belonged to the Aws. Supporting this is what Qatādah relates from Anas: “The two clans, Aws and Khazraj, once boasted against one another. The Aws said, ‘Among us is the one the angels bathed—Ḥanzalah ibn Abī ʿĀmir; among us is the one whom the hornets shielded—ʿĀṣim ibn Thābit; among us is he at whose death the Throne shook—Saʿd ibn Muʿādh; and among us is he whose testimony the Prophet accepted in place of two men—Khuzaimah ibn Thābit.’ The Khazraj replied, ‘Among us are four who gathered the Quran during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: Ubayy, Muʿādh ibn Jabal, Zayd ibn Thābit, and Abū Zayd.’
