Al-Samʿānī said: “He was an elderly shaykh from a household of leadership and prominence, widely versed in transmission, and the possessor of fine, commendable source-works. He heard hadith himself—and in great quantity—then transmitted and compiled. Most of his hearing was through the recitation of Ibn al-Khāḍibah; I read a great deal to him. He used to travel down to Wāsiṭ on the caliph’s behalf for the duties conducted there. He died on the seventh of Rajab, 539 AH.”
