72 – al-Maṣīṣī, Naṣr Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Qawī
The shaykh, imam, mufti, and scholar of legal theory; the Shaykh of Damascus, Abū al-Fath Naṣr Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Qawī al-Maṣīṣī—then al-Lādhikī, then al-Dimashqī—was a Shāfiʿī and an Ashʿarī both by lineage and by school. So declared al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim (1).
He went on to say: “He grew up in Tyre, where he heard ḥadith from al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb, ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad al-Āmidī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Abharī, and the jurist Naṣr, under whom he also studied jurisprudence. In Baghdad he heard from ʿĀṣim ibn al-Ḥasan and Rizq Allah al-Tamīmī; in Isfahan from Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Shakruwayh and the vizier Niẓām al-Mulk; in al-Anbār from its preacher Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-Akhdar; and in Damascus from Abū al-Qāsim ibn Abī al-ʿAlāʾ. He acquired his knowledge of kalām from Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAtīq al-Qayrawānī….”
He continues: “He was uncompromising in his adherence to the Sunnah, excelled in prayer, avoided the doors of rulers, and served as the teacher of the Western Zāwiyah—that is, the Ghazāliyya (2)—after his shaykh, the jurist Naṣr. He endowed several charitable waqfs.”
He was born in Latakia in 448 AH.
