Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I said: This statement is nearer to the truth than what has already been reported, for the bulk of his teachers belonged to the period after 500 AH, and he met them when he was twenty years old.

He then said: The eldest of his shaykhs, both in age and in chain of transmission, was the ascetic ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥijārī (1). His father had taken him, at the age of ten, to Abū ʿUmar al-Ṭalamankī, under whom he recited the Quran. We have mentioned him under the events of 502 AH, and that he lived to be eighty-eight.

He also said: Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn al-ʿArīf passed away in Marrakesh on the night preceding Friday, the twenty-third of Ramaḍān in 536 AH.

Ibn Bashkuwāl, however, said (2) that the death occurred in Ṣafar rather than Ramaḍān—Allah knows best.

Ibn Bashkuwāl further related: A great multitude attended his funeral, and the sultan regretted what he had done to him; afterwards, miracles were manifested through him—may Allah sanctify his soul—(3).

The surname al-Halwani is vocalized in the base manuscript with damma on the initial haʾ and a nun before the final yaʾ. Al-Ansab, however, gives it as al-Halawaʾi, with fatha on the haʾ and a final hamza, indicating association with the trade of making or selling sweets; Ibn al-Athir and Ibn Hajar record it likewise but retain a final nun. Al-Qamus and Ibn Hajar both note that the name may be pronounced with a hamza and with a terminal nun.
