Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Among those who transmitted from him were: Ibn ʿAsākir; al-Samʿānī; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭabasī; Muḥammad ibn Faḍl Allāh al-Sālarī; Manṣūr al-Furāwī; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn ʿAlī ibn Ḥammūyah; Majd al-Dīn Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Qāsim al-Shahrazūrī; al-Muʾayyad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī; Zaynab al-Shaʿriyyah; al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣaffār; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUthmān the reciter, and many others.

Al-Samʿānī said: “I wrote a great deal from him. He would dictate in the New Mosque of Nīshāpūr every Friday, standing in for his brother. He was among the best of men—humble, gracious, approachable, constantly engaged in remembrance, frequent in Qurʼanic recitation, dutiful to his kin. He excelled his contemporaries in several respects. Among the works he had heard is the book al-Zuhriyyāt from Ibn Abī Ḥāmid al-Azharī—Abū Saʿd Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥamdūn related to us, saying: ‘Abū Ḥāmid Ibn al-Sharqī informed us; al-Dhulī, the compiler, narrated to us’—and he heard the Risālah al-Qushayriyyah directly from its author.”

He was ill for one week and died on the eighteenth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, 541 AH.

Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh informed us; Abū al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed us; Wajīh ibn Ṭāhir informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Qushayrī informed us; Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Khaffāf narrated to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj narrated to us; Qutaybah narrated to us; Bakr, from Jaʿfar, from Rabīʿah, from al-Aʿraj, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mālik ibn Buhaynah—may Allah be pleased with him—reported:

Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed (1), he would separate his arms so that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.

It was recorded by Aḥmad, al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and al-Nasāʾī through the narration of Qutaybah (2).

(1) The main text of the manuscript reads salla (“prayed”), while the marginal note has sajada (“prostrated”); the latter wording corresponds to one of the versions recorded by Muslim. (2) Reported by al-Bukhari, nos. 390, 391, 807, 3564; Muslim, no. 495; al-Nasaʾi, 2/212; and Ahmad, 5/345.
