He was widely travelled and possessed abundant wealth. Among those who transmitted from him was Yaḥyā ibn Bawsh. Ibn Nāṣir said, “He had no grasp of ḥadīth; he was a merchant.” I say: he died in 531 AH and was born in 460 AH.
63 – Sharaf al-Islām ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad al-Anṣārī*
The shaykh, the imām, the erudite scholar, the preacher, the senior authority of the Ḥanbalīs in Damascus—Sharaf al-Islām, Abū al-Qāsim (1) ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, son of the foremost Ḥanbalī, the shaykh Abū al-Faraj ʿAbd al-Wāḥid (2) ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Anṣārī—was of Shīrāzī origin but a Damascene by residence.
He studied jurisprudence under his father.
He narrated, by ijāzah, from Abū Ṭālib ibn Yūsuf.
His sermons met with exceptional acceptance; his prestige and leadership grew steadily. King Būrī (3) sent him as an envoy to the caliph al-Mustarshid bi-llāh, imploring his aid against the incursions of the Franks, who had already taken much of greater Syria.
