He was humble, upright, and fully conversant with the Shāfiʿī school.
Al-Samʿānī (1) said: “Among the texts I heard from him in Nishapur was al-Bayhaqī’s Maʿrifat al-Sunan wa-l-Āthār. I noticed his certificate of audition appended to two of its fascicles, but the ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥabīb, after examining al-Bayhaqī’s autograph, found no trace of ʿAbd al-Jabbār’s audition for those two parts.
Al-Samʿānī continued: ‘So I read the two fascicles to the judge Ibn Futaima (2), who had heard the entire book. Most of ʿAbd al-Jabbār’s audition, however, came through the recitation of his son Muḥammad in 553 AH. Later our shaykh ʿAbd al-Jabbār informed us that he had located his own certificate of audition for the two fascicles in the master copy preserved at Nishapur.’”
He passed away in Shaʿbān, 536 AH.
