26 – The Lord of Damascus, Maḥmūd ibn Būrī ibn Ṭughtikīn*
His Majesty Shihāb al-Dīn, Abū al-Qāsim Maḥmūd, son of Tāj al-Mulūk Būrī, son of the atabeg Ṭughtikīn.
He came to power after his brother was killed (1), with the assistance of his mother Zumurrud, while the commander of his army was Muʿīn al-Dīn (2) Anur.
Ibn ʿAsākir said: “Affairs during his reign were well ordered until a group of his attendants rose against him and killed him in Shawwāl of the year 533 AH. His brother then arrived from Baʿlabakk and took possession of Damascus without resistance.”
Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Qalānsī stated: “He was assassinated by Al-Baqsh (3) the Armenian, together with Yūsuf the servant in whom he trusted while he slept, and the chamberlain. The three of them would spend the night around his bed; they slew him as he lay asleep, slipped out unnoticed, and were pursued. Al-Baqsh escaped, while the other two were crucified (4).”
