His birth: in the year 462 (1) AH, in Beirut.
He studied under the jurist Naṣr (2).
Those who narrated from him include Ibn ʿAsākir (3) and al-Mubārak ibn Kāmil.
He taught, oversaw Qurʾān recitation, preached, and performed the pilgrimage several times.
He also transmitted from al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Ṭabarī.
Ibn Kāmil said: “In my lifetime I never saw his equal; he combined knowledge with practice, asceticism with scrupulousness, gentlemanly conduct, and fine manners. The day of his funeral was a scene attended by throngs.”
Abū l-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī (4) said: “I saw him preaching in the Palace Mosque, and he was excessive in his adherence to the Ashʿarī school.”
Ibn ʿAsākir (5) said: “He issued fatwas, engaged in debate, and offered admonitions. His preaching sessions contained little superfluity, following the way of the early scholars. He died on the seventeenth of Ṣafar in the year 527 (6) AH.”
I say: The extremists among the Muʿtazilites, the Shiʿites, the Ḥanbalites, the Ashʿarites, the Murjiʾites, the Jahmites, and the Karramites have overflowed the world and become many; among them are intelligent men, devout worshippers, and scholars. We ask Allah for pardon and forgiveness.
