His son, the jurist Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAlī, died in Isfahan sometime after 570 AH. He had taken up residence there, his children joined him, and he returned shortly before his death, sold an estate he owned, and then went back to Isfahan. The ḥadith master Abū al-Mawāhib heard from him.
15 – Ibn Tawbah, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Asadī
The shaykh, the imam, the Qur’an reciter, the ḥadith transmitter, Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn Tawbah al-Asadī al-ʿUkbarī, was born in 455 AH. He recited the Qur’an in its various narrations to the students of Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥammāmī and studied some jurisprudence under Shaykh Abū Isḥāq. He was dignified, imposing, and solemn.
He heard ḥadith from Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Muslima, Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Maʾmūn, and al-Ṣarīfīnī.
Al-Samʿānī said: “He is upright and virtuous, with an excellent manner of transmission. I read a great deal to him and preferred listening from him over anyone else (1).”
I say: among those who narrated from him were Ibn ʿAsākir and al-Tāj al-Kindī.
He died in Ṣafar, 535 AH.
