(1) Tabyin Kadhib al-Muftari, p. 326, states: “He settled in Kerman until his death; he enjoyed prestige with its sultan, was highly regarded by its people, and respected by scholars everywhere.” Al-Samani adds in al-Tahbir, 1/81: “After travelling to Kerman, the ruler received him warmly, the vizier Makram b. al-Ala showed him favour, and he attained honour, social standing, wealth, and refinement, remaining esteemed and venerated there until he died.” Ibn al-Jawzi remarks in al-Muntazam, 10/74: “He had an established position with kings and sultans.” (2) Ibn Asakir reports in al-Tabyin: “I met him in Baghdad in 521 AH/1127 CE and heard hadith from him. A Baghdadi asked, ‘Did you study the book al-Irshad under Imam Abu al-Maali?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ When the man requested permission to read it to him, he consented. They began reading in the customary hadith manner, but after about a page he said, ‘This discipline is not read as hadith is, merely for transmission; it must be studied gradually for understanding. If you wish to read it as we did, continue; otherwise, stop.’” (*) Al-Sila, 2/440–441 (entry: Isa b. Muhammad b. Abd Allah b. Isa b. Muammal); al-Ghuniyya, pp. 249–252.
