Abū al-Muẓaffar, son of the teacher Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Hawāzin al-Qushayrī of Nishapur.
He was born in 445 AH.
He studied the Musnad of Abū Yaʿlā with Abū Saʿd Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kanjarūdhī, and he read the Musnad of Abū ʿAwanah with his own father. He also heard hadith from Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad al-Buḥayrī, the ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī, al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Darbandī, Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr ibn Khalaf al-Maghribī; in Mecca he learned from Abū ʿAlī al-Shāfiʿī and Abū al-Qāsim al-Zanjānī; and in Baghdad from Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Naqqūr, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAlī al-Anmāṭī, and Abū al-Qāsim Yūsuf al-Mihrawānī. He himself taught in Baghdad and elsewhere.
Those who transmitted from him include: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Anmāṭī, Abū al-Fatḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Salām, Abū Saʿd al-Samʿānī, Ibn ʿAsākir, ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Abī al-Qāsim al-Shaʿrī, his sister Zaynab al-Shaʿriyyah, and others.
Al-Samʿānī said: “He was a pleasant shaykh, of unimpeachable character and sound conduct, never intrusive in people’s affairs. His brother Abū Naṣr raised him, performed the pilgrimage with him, and then set out again, while Ibn al-Qushayrī remained in Baghdad and later travelled on to Kirmān. I heard from him the Musnad of Abū ʿAwanah, a volume of the hadiths of al-Sarrāj, and the Risālah authored by his father. He listened attentively to whatever was read before him, and in this regard Ibn ʿAsākir preferred him to al-Farāwī.”
ʿAbd al-Ghāfir said: “His brother Abū Naṣr compiled for him a set of selected narrations (fawāʾid).”
Ibn al-Najjār said: “He kept to his house, devoting himself to worship and to copying Qurʾān manuscripts. He was agreeable in company, refined, and generous; his brother likewise prepared for him a collection of selected narrations …”
