Al-Salafī said: “Abū al-Ḥusayn was fiercely loyal to his school. He often spoke out against the Ashʿarīs and made sure they heard it, fearing no reproach for the sake of Allah. He authored several works championing the Ḥanbalī school. He was devout, reliable, and firmly grounded; we ourselves heard ḥadith from him.”

Ibn al-Jawzī (1) related: “He had a room in his house at Bāb al-Marātib where he slept alone. A servant learned that he possessed some money, so they slaughtered him at night and took the money on the eve of ʿĀshūrāʾ in 526 AH. The culprits were soon caught and executed.”

Ibn al-Najjār said: “He excelled and wrote on the two foundations (uṣūl al-dīn and uṣūl al-fiqh), on juristic disputation, and on the school itself. He was devout, trustworthy, of commendable conduct—may Allah have mercy on him.”
