325 – al-Mustarshid bi Allah, al-Faḍl ibn al-Mustazhir bi Allah
He is the Commander of the Faithful, Abū Manṣūr al-Faḍl(1) son of al-Mustazhir bi Allah Aḥmad, son of al-Muqtadī bi-Amr Allah ʿAbd Allah, son of Muḥammad, son of al-Qāʾim ʿAbd Allah, son of al-Qādir—an Arab of Qurashi, Hāshimid, Abbasid lineage, born and raised in Baghdad.
Birth: He was born in Shaʿbān of the year 486 AH, during the caliphate of his grandfather al-Muqtadī. The Friday sermon named him heir apparent while he was still at the breast, and coins were struck in his name.
In 494 AH he heard ḥadith from Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAllāf; he also heard from Abū al-Qāsim ibn Bayān and from his tutor Abū al-Barakāt ibn al-Sībī.
Those who transmitted from him include his vizier ʿAlī ibn Ṭirād, Ḥamzah ibn ʿAlī al-Rāzī, and Ismāʿīl ibn al-Mulaqqab.
He possessed a superb hand in calligraphy, produced elegant prose and fine poetry, and combined this with piety, sound judgment, dignity, and courage. He was eminently qualified for the imamate, with few equals in his time.
