Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

— all of which he had heard from Ibn ʿAbd al-Rahim on that scholar’s authority; he likewise related al-Adab by Ibn Abi ʿAsim, the same author’s al-Ahad waʾl-Mathani, the Jamiʿ of Ahmad ibn al-Furat (1), and al-Salat of Abu Nuʿaym (2).

He was born in 434 AH.

He passed away on the ninth of Jumada al-Ula, 523 AH, and after him none of Ibn Ridhah’s students remained except Fatimah.

309 – al-Taraqi, Abu al-ʿAbbas Ahmad ibn Thabit ibn Muhammad

The hadith master, Abu al-ʿAbbas Ahmad ibn Thabit ibn Muhammad al-Isfahani.

Tarq is one of the villages of Isfahan (3).

He settled in Bard. Gifted in various disciplines, he authored several works; nevertheless, he erred and held that the soul is pre-eternal (4).

(3) Al-Samʿani states that it is a large village, comparable to a small town, situated about twenty farsakhs (roughly 120 km) from Isfahan. (4) In Al-Ansab, al-Samʿani reports this view with a note of reservation: “It is related that he used to say, ‘the ruh (spirit) is eternal.’ Allah knows best whether this can truly be ascribed to him.” The author of Mizan al-Iʿtidal, 1/86-87, adds: “His proof was the verse qul al-ruh min amri rabbi (‘Say: the Spirit is of my Lord’s command’); they argued that His ‘command’ (amr) is eternal and distinct from His creation, citing a lahu al-khalq wa-l-amr (‘Surely, to Him belong the creation and the command’) and wa kadhalika awhayna ilayka ruhan min amrina (‘Thus We have revealed to you a Spirit of Our command’). This is one of the worst and most misleading innovations, for people know that every living being—body and spirit alike—is created.”
