The shaykh and hadith transmitter, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muḥammad, son of the Shaykh al-Islām Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Bayhaqī, from Khusrawjird.
He received his grandfather’s books directly from him. He also learned from Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Ṣābūnī, Abū Saʿd Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm the Qurʾān-reciter, and several others.
He performed the pilgrimage and later taught in Baghdad.
Among those who narrated from him were Ibn Nāṣir, Abū al-Muʿammar al-Anṣārī, Abū al-Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Mandāʾī, and a number of others.
He was born in 449 AH.
Ibn ʿAsākir said: “He really knew nothing, yet he made a great display of issuing ijāzahs and would declare, ‘I grant a license only for a ṭassūj (1).’
