I add: he used to accept gold for teaching the Ten canonical readings.
Ibn al-Najjār relates: I heard Aḥmad ibn al-Bandanījī say, “I asked Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad ibn al-Qāṣ, ‘Did you ever study under Abū al-ʿIzz?’ He answered, ‘When he came to Baghdad I wanted to read to him, but he demanded gold from me. I said, “By Allah, I could afford it, yet I will not pay a fee for the Qur’an,” so I never read to him.’ (1)
Khamīs al-Ḥawzī said: “He was one of the outstanding imams in the sciences of the Qur’an, excelling in the variant readings.”
I further note: those who recited to him included Sibt al-Khayyāṭ, Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Zurayq al-Ḥaddād, Abū Bakr ibn al-Bāqillānī, ʿAlī ibn ʿAsākir al-Baṭāʾiḥī, and many others; his name became widely known.
He died in Shawwāl of the year 521 AH.
