Zāʾidah narrated, through ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, declared, “Emulate those who come after me—Abu Bakr and ʿUmar.”
Sālim Abū al-ʿAlāʾ—who is weak—also transmitted it from ʿAmr ibn Hurm, from Ribʿī. The report of Zāʾidah is ḥasan (sound).
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Muṭṭalib ibn Ḥanṭab likewise related, from his father, from his grandfather: “I was sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when Abu Bakr and ʿUmar appeared. He said, ‘These two are my hearing and my sight.’ A similar wording is reported from Ibn ʿUmar and others.”
Yaʿqūb al-Qummī narrated, on the authority of Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīrah, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said: “Gabriel came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, ‘Convey greetings to ʿUmar and tell him that his anger is strength and his pleasure is justice.’ The mursal version is the more reliable, though some connect it with a chain from Ibn ʿAbbās.”
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ transmitted, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Advance, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb! By Him in whose hand is my soul, whenever Satan meets you on a path he takes another path, avoiding yours.”
ʿĀʾishah narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Indeed, Satan flees from ʿUmar.” It was related by Mubārak ibn Faḍālah, from ʿUbayd-Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from al-Qāsim, from ʿĀʾishah.
She also reported that when the Abyssinians were performing their spear-dance and ʿUmar arrived, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, remarked, “I can see the devils—whether jinn or human—running away from ʿUmar.” Al-Tirmidhī deemed it authentic.
