Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

you will have matched al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and among them is the report of al-Miswar: “Fatimah is but a part of me.” (1)

A number of our teachers granted us licence, saying that ʿAfīfa had informed them from ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Ḥasan. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad al-Wāḥidī told us; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī told us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Aṣbahānī told us; Aḥmad ibn Mahdī narrated to us; Thābit ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Sufyān al-Thawrī—on the authority of Abū al-Zubayr, on the authority of Jābir—

from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “A mere scowl does not break the prayer, but the rumbling of the stomach does.” (2)

This ḥadith is objectionable, and Thābit is weak. (3)

(1) The report is recorded in Bukhari, nos. 3714 and 3767 (Virtues of the Companions) and no. 5230 (Book of Marriage); Muslim, no. 2449 (95) (Virtues of the Companions); Ahmad, 4/326; Abu Dawud, 2069 and 2071; al-Tirmidhi, 3867; and Ibn Majah, 1998–1999, all on the authority of al-Miswar b. Makhrama. He said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say while standing on the pulpit: ‘The clan of Banu Hisham b. al-Mughirah have sought permission to marry their daughter to Ali b. Abi Talib. I do not give permission, I do not give permission, I do not give permission—unless Ibn Abi Talib wishes to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter. She is but a part of me; what distresses her distresses me, and what harms her harms me.’” This is Bukhari’s wording. Muslim adds: “I do not forbid what is lawful nor permit what is unlawful, but, by Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be under the same roof.” (2) The report is also transmitted by al-Khatib, Tarikh Baghdad 11/345; al-Tabarani, al-Muʿjam al-saghir 2/84; Abu Nuʿaym, Tarikh Isfahan 1/86; and Ibn ʿAdi, al-Kamil, fol. 46/2, through ʿAbd al-Razzaq (no. 3774) from Sufyan al-Thawri as a mawquf report. Al-Khatib notes that Ahmad b. Mahdi alone related it from Thabit al-Zahid, from al-Thawri, as mawquf, and that its marfuʿ version is unsound. Al-Darqutni 1/174 and al-Bayhaqi 2/251 likewise report it via two chains from Sufyan as mawquf; the latter remarks that Thabit b. Muhammad al-Zahid raised it to the Prophet, which is a mistake on his part. (3) The Introduction to Fath al-Bari, p. 394, states: Thabit b. Muhammad al-ʿAbdi was declared trustworthy by Mutayyin and deemed reliable by Abu Hatim; al-Darqutni said, “he is not strong,” while Ibn ʿAdi commented, “in my view he does not deliberately lie, though he may err.” Al-Hafiz adds that Bukhari cited him in the Sahih for two hadiths—in the chapters on Gifts and on Tawhid—in which he was not the sole transmitter.
