Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

It was also recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim through several chains ⦗1⦘.

  1. Ibn al-Danaf, Muhammad ibn ʿAli ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Baghdadi
The imam, jurist, devoted worshipper, Qur’an reciter, and one of the last representatives of the early generation—Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn ʿAli ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Danaf ⦗2⦘, a Baghdadi, a Hanbali, and by trade a cobbler.

He studied jurisprudence under Abu Jaʿfar ibn Abi Musa.

He heard hadith from ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Maʾmun, Abu Jaʿfar ibn al-Muslima, al-Ṣarifini, and a number of others.

Among those who studied with him were Ibn Nasir, Laḥiq ibn Karah, Dhakir ibn Kamil, and Ibn Bawsh. He was counted among the eminent shaykhs of scholarship.

(1) This hadith is found in al-Bukhari, nos. 6561–6562 (Kitab al-Riqaq, “Description of Paradise and Hell”) and in Muslim, no. 213 (Kitab al-Iman, “The least severe punishment of the people of Hell”). It is likewise reported by Ahmad, 4/274, and by al-Tirmidhi, no. 2604. Parallel chains exist: from Ibn Abbas in Ahmad, 1/290 and 1/296, and in Muslim, no. 212, where the unnamed man is identified as Abu Talib; from Abu Sa id al-Khudri in Ahmad, 3/13 and 3/78, and in Muslim, no. 211; and from Abu Hurayra in Ahmad, 2/432, and al-Darimi, 2/340. The term mirjal denotes a copper cauldron, and more generally any vessel in which water boils; qumqum is a narrow-mouthed container, usually of copper, used for heating water. Al-Bukhari’s wording reads, “as the mirjal boils bi-l-qumqum,” which Ibn al-Tin judged problematic. Qadi Iyad considered the correct form to be “as the mirjal wa-l-qumqum boil,” with the conjunction wa, not the preposition bi, while others allow bi to mean “together with.” Al-Isma ili’s recension has “as the mirjal aw l-qumqum boils,” the wording adopted here, which is clearer and more idiomatic. (2) The word is pronounced with fathah on the dal, kasrah on the nun, and ends with fa, as noted by Ibn Nuqta and quoted by Ibn Rajab, Dhayl al-Tabaqat, 1/173.
