I shall escort my hopes to Ibn Muqallid,
and he will bring to triumph whatever twists of Time have wronged their bearer—
all this in but a handful of lines.
280 – Ibn al-Khāzin, Abū ʾl-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl*: a man of letters from Dīnawar who later settled in Baghdad, a poet famed for his exquisite calligraphy and polished verse (1). He died in 518 AH. His script was comparable to that of the scribe Abū ʾl-Fawāris Ibn al-Khāzin. He had a son who copied the Maqāmāt extensively, namely Abū ʾl-Fatḥ Naṣr Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Khāzin. Abū ʾl-Fawāris transmitted reports from al-Jawharī. About him al-Salafī remarked (2): “He had the most beautiful handwriting of anyone.”

(1) Among his poems is the piece cited by Ibn Khallikan (1/150) and Salah al-Safadi (8/79):
An elegant youth whose speech proclaims pure Arab descent, * while his bewitching eyes seem borrowed from distant India;
I drained the cup of patience before his watchers, * yet one brief hour of union with him is sweeter than honey;
I made peace with all his uncles and cousins, * save one alone who jealously guards the cheek;
Like a drop of musk set within a pomegranate blossom, * I beheld the violet planted in the heart of the rose.
(2) I.e. the reference is to Abu al-Fawaris.
