(1) Al-Samani vocalises the nisba “Najanikathi” with a damma on the first nun, a fatha on the jim, followed by an alif, another nun with a kasra, a quiescent ya, an open kaf, and finally the letter tha (th). He states that it derives from Najanikath, a small town in the vicinity of Samarqand, apparently near Isrushana. Among those who bore this nisba he mentions Muhammad b. Yusuf, describing him as a pious, even-tempered jurist who heard hadith from Abu al-Hasan Ali b. Uthman al-Kharrat and others. Al-Samani notes that he himself wrote from him in Samarqand and that the latter also transmitted from the subject of the present biography.
