Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He added that ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAlī al-Azajī and others granted him written authorisation.

Those who narrated from him include Abū Ṭāhir al-Salafī, al-Ṣāʾin ibn ʿAsākir, Ibn Bawsh, Dhākir ibn Kāmil, and several others.

His ijāza was held exclusively by Yaḥyā ibn Bawsh and ʿAfīfa al-Fārfāniyya.

He died in Rajab, 517 AH, and was born in 434 AH.

Ibn al-Najjār said: “He is truthful, has a sound audition, and worked as a book broker.”

Aḥmad ibn Salāmah informed us; then Yahyā ibn Bawsh informed us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār—while we read to him—told us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Yazīd narrated to us; Ibn Abī Khālid informed us, from Ḥakīm ibn Jābir, from ʿUbāda ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Gold for gold, equal for equal, hand to hand…’” and he mentioned the rest of the ḥadīth (1).

(1) The chain is sound. Al-Harith b. Muhammad is Ibn Abi Usama al-Tamimi al-Baghdadi, the well-known hafiz and author of the Musnad; Yazid is Ibn Harun al-Wasiti; and Ibn Abi Khalid is Ismail b. Abi Khalid al-Ahmasi. Al-Nasai, 7/277, and al-Bayhaqi, 5/278, record the narration through two routes from Ismail b. Abi Khalid with this same isnad. The hadith is also transmitted by Ahmad, 5/320; Muslim, no. 1587; Abu Dawud, 3350; al-Tirmidhi, 1240; Ibn al-Jarud, 650; al-Darimi, 2/258-259; al-Daraqutni, 3/24; al-Tahawi, 4/66; and al-Bayhaqi, 5/278 and 284, all through Abu Qilabah Abd Allah b. Zayd al-Jarmi, from Abu al-Ashath al-Sanani, from Ubadah b. al-Samit. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, and salt for salt—like for like, equal for equal, hand to hand. Whoever adds or asks for an addition has engaged in riba; the giver and the taker are alike.” Abu Qilabah’s report is corroborated by Muslim b. Yasar al-Makki, who narrates it from Abu al-Ashath in Abu Dawud, 3349; al-Nasai, 7/274-277; Ibn Majah, 2254; al-Tahawi, 4/66; and al-Bayhaqi, 5/277.
