He was born in 431 AH.
He heard hadith from Abū Bakr ibn Bishrān, Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Shayṭā, Abū Muḥammad al-Jawharī, al-Ḥasan ibn Ghālib the Qur’an-reciter, and the judge Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Farrāʾ, under whom he also studied jurisprudence.
He recited the ten canonical readings under Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Shayṭā.
He studied Arabic with Abū al-Qāsim ibn Barhān.
He acquired the rational sciences from the two Muʿtazilī shaykhs—Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Walīd and Abū al-Qāsim ibn al-Tabbān, both disciples of Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Baṣrī—so he drifted away from the Sunnah. ⦗1⦘
(1) The author writes in Maʿrifat al-Qurraʾ, 1/380: “He learned kalam from Abu ʿAli ibn al-Walid and Abu ’l-Qasim ibn al-Tabban; consequently a trace of Jahmite and Muʿtazilite thought, as well as other deviations, entered into him.”
He states in al-Mizan, 3/146: “One of the great figures, unrivalled in his time for learning, transmission, intelligence and versatility … yet he opposed the early generations (salaf) and sided with the Muʿtazila in several innovative doctrines. We ask Allah for safety, for excessive plunging into kalam can harm its practitioner, and part of a person’s sound Islam is to leave what does not concern him.”
Shaykh al-Islam clarifies the type of error involved in Darʾ Taʿarud al-ʿAql wa-l-Naql, 8/60-61: “Ibn ʿAqil produced various kinds of discourse. He was extraordinarily intelligent, constantly reflecting on people’s statements. At times he takes the path of those who deny the corporeal attributes, censuring anyone who calls them ‘attributes’ and saying they are merely relations—thus agreeing with the Muʿtazila—as in his book Dhamm al-Tashbih wa-Ithbat al-Tanzih and others. Abu ’l-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi followed him in Kaf al-Tashbih bi-Kaf al-Tanzih and in his Minhaj al-Usul.
At other times he affirms the transmitted (khabari) attributes and refutes the deniers and the Muʿtazila with clear arguments; sometimes he deems allegorical interpretation (taʾwil) obligatory, as in his Kitab al-Wadih; and at other moments he forbids and criticises taʾwil, as in his Intisar li-Ashab al-Hadith. Thus his writings contain eloquent, praiseworthy passages, but also statements contrary to the sunnah and to truth that are blameworthy and rejected. … Ibn ʿAqil is likewise known for his reproach of those practitioners of kalam and Sufism who deviated from the shariʿa, as he recorded in al-Funun—from his own handwriting I copied it—then he quoted a lengthy section occupying seven pages; consult it.”
He also says, 1/270: “Al-Ashʿari was closer to the doctrine of Ahmad and Ahl al-Sunnah than many later Hanbalis who inclined toward some Muʿtazilite ideas, such as Ibn ʿAqil, Sadaqa ibn al-Husayn, Ibn al-Jawzi and their likes.”
And he adds, 7/263: “In this chapter, the chapter on things ascribed to Allah by way of creation and ownership, …
