The Battle of Marj al-Saffar:
Khalīfah said: It was fought with twelve days of Jumada al-Ūlā still remaining, and the commander was Khālid ibn al-Walīd. Ibn Isḥāq adds that the enemy host was under the command of Qalaqṭ that day; a great slaughter befell the idolaters and they were put to flight.
Khalīfah also transmits—through al-Walīd ibn Hishām from his father—that Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ was martyred at Marj al-Saffar. It is further said that his brother ʿAmr was likewise killed, together with al-Faḍl ibn al-ʿAbbās, ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl, and—though reports differ—Abān ibn Saʿīd.
Another report states that on that day Namīlah ibn ʿUthmān al-Laythī, Saʿd ibn Salamah al-Ashhalī, and Salim ibn Aslam al-Ashhalī were also slain.
Some maintain that the battle occurred at the beginning of the year 14 AH, yet the first opinion is sounder.
Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz relates: “They met by the river near the mill; so many Byzantines were killed that the water ran with their blood, and the millstones turned by it—whereupon victory was sent down.” On that same day Umm Ḥakīm killed seven Byzantine soldiers with the pole of her tent. She had been married to ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl, after whose death she wed Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ.
Muḥammad ibn Shuʿayb says: “He remained with her only seven days at the Bridge of Umm Ḥakīm near al-Saffar,”
