from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had performed the dawn prayer, the women would leave wrapped in their cloaks, unrecognizable in the dim pre-dawn light.” (1)
259 – Ibn ʿAqīl, Abū al-Wafāʾ ʿAlī ibn ʿAqīl ibn Muḥammad
The Imām, the erudite authority, the ocean of knowledge, shaykh of the Ḥanbalīs: Abū al-Wafāʾ ʿAlī ibn ʿAqīl ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghdādī, al-Ẓafarī, the Ḥanbalī theologian and prolific author. He lived in the Ẓafarīyah quarter, and his mosque there is well known. (2)
(1) The hadith is cited in Sharh al-Sunna 2/195, no. 353; in the Muwattaʾ 1/5 (chapter: prayer times). Through the chain of Malik it was recorded by al-Bukhari, no. 867 (Book of the Adhan, “The people’s waiting for the learned imam to rise for the prayer”); by Muslim 645 (232) (Book of Mosques, “The recommendation to offer the dawn prayer at its earliest time, i.e., in semi-darkness”); by Abu Dawud 423; al-Tirmidhi 153; and al-Nasaʾi 1/271 (Book of the Prayer Times, “Praying in darkness while resident”).
Al-Bukhari also transmitted it under nos. 372 and 578, and Muslim 645 (230) and (231), all from al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwa, from ʿAʾisha. Al-Bukhari further related it (no. 872) through Yahya b. Musa, from Saʿid b. Mansur, from Fulayh, from ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim, from his father, from ʿAʾisha.
The expression “mutaliffiʿat bi-murūtihinna” means “wrapped in their cloaks”: talaffuʿ is to envelop oneself in a garment; murūt ( sing. mirṭ ) are wide mantles; and ghalas denotes the darkness at the end of the night mingled with the first light of dawn.

(2) Yaqut, Muʿjam 4/60: “Al-Zafiriya is a large quarter in eastern Baghdad; beside it is another sizeable district called Qirah Zafar, located to the south of Bab Abras, while al-Zafiriya lies to its west. Both quarters, it seems, were named after Zafar, one of the servants of the caliphal palace.”
