Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Isfahānī, al-Ṣayrafī (the money-changer), nicknamed al-Ashqar, the transmitter of the Kitāb al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1) by al-Tabarānī, which he narrated from Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Fādhshāh.
He also received ḥadīth from Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shādhān al-Aʿraj.
Those who reported from him include: Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad in his Kitāb al-Targhīb; Abū Ṭāhir al-Silafī; Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadhānī; Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Mahhād; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Ṭarāsūsī; Muḥammad ibn Abī Zayd al-Karrānī, the baker; and, in the gathering itself, Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaydalānī—that is, Maḥmūd ibn Abī al-ʿAlāʾ.

(1) At the end of the first volume of al-Tabarani’s al-Mu jam al-Kabir kept at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus there is a certificate of audition. Its text reads: “From the beginning of the book it was heard from the pious shaykh Abu Rashid Habib b. Ibrahim b. Abd Allah b. Yaqub al-Sufi—may God protect him—according to his audition from the shaykh Abu Mansur Mahmud b. Isma il b. Muhammad al-Ashqar the money-changer. This copy has been taken from his original audition-record and collated with it through the transmission of Abu al-Husayn Ahmad b. Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Fadhshah, who heard it from the author, the great imam, ‘Sword of the Sunnah’, Abu al-Qasim Sulayman b. Ahmad b. Ayyub b. Mutayr al-Lakhmi al-Tabarani the hadith master—may God show them mercy—read to him by his colleague, the scrupulous, precise imam, Taqi al-Din, ‘Light of the Sunnah’, ‘Beauty of Islam’, ‘Adornment of the Traditionists’, ‘Rarity of the Age’, Abu Muhammad Abd al-Ghani b. Abd Allah b. Ahmad b. Ali b. Surur al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali—may God multiply his likes among the learned and reward him well. Present were: the chaste youth Abu al-Mutahhar Muhammad b. Abi al-Mutahhar b. Ahmad al-Khabbaz; his maternal uncle Abu al-Qasim Jami b. Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Madini; Muhammad b. Ali b. Muhammad b. Ali al-Lanjali; Abu al-Khair Ubayd Allah b. Muhammad b. Abi al-Khair the judge; Abu al-Karam Muhammad b. Abi Rashid b. Abi al-Qasim b. Muhammad al-Ansari al-Sukkari; and the Qur an-reciter Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Ghanim b. Abi Zayd, who drafted this certificate and recorded the names of those present. The hearing was completed in several sessions in Isfahan, the city of the Sunnis, the last of which occurred in Safar 575/September 1179. May God make them among the righteous for the sake of the Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.”

حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ: إِسْمَاعِيْلُ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي كِتَابِ (التَّرْغِيْبِ) ، وَأَبُو طَاهِرٍ السِّلَفِيُّ، وَأَبُو العَلاَءِ الهَمْدَانِيُّ، وَأَبُو مُوْسَى المَدِيْنِيُّ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بنُ أَحْمَدَ المَهَّادُ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بنُ إِسْمَاعِيْلَ الطَّرَسُوسِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّد بن أَبِي زَيْدٍ الكَرَّانِيّ الخَبَّازُ، وَبَالحُضُوْرِ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الصَّيْدَلاَنِيّ، وَهُوَ مَحْمُوْدُ بن أَبِي العَلاَءِ.

(١) وفي آخر المجلد الأول من معجم الطبراني الكبير الموجود في دار الكتب الظاهرية بدمشق سماع للمعجم، وهذا نصه: بلغ من أول الكتاب سماعا على الشيخ الصالح أبي رشيد حبيب بن إبراهيم بن عبد الله بن يعقوب الصوفي حاطه الله بحق سماعه عن الشيخ أبي منصور محمود بن إسماعيل بن محمد الاشقر الصيرفي وقد نقل من أصل سماعه، وعورض به عن أبي الحسين أحمد بن محمد بن الحسين بن فاذشاه، عن مصنفه الامام الكبير سيف السنة أبي القاسم سليمان بن أحمد بن أيوب بن مطير اللخمي الطبراني الحافظ رحمهم اله بقراءة صاحبه الامام الحافظ الورع المتقن تقي الدين، ضياء السنة، جمال الإسلام، زين المحدثين، نادرة الزمان أبي محمد عبد الغني بن عبد الله بن أحمد بن علي بن سرور المقدسي الحنبلي، أكثر الله في أهل العلم أمثاله، وجزاه خيرا: الفتى العفيف أبو المطهر محمد بن أبي المطهر بن أحمد الخباز، وأخوه من قبل الام أبو القاسم جامع بن أحمد بن محمد المديني، ومحمد بن علي بن محمد بن علي اللنجالي حضر، وأبو الخير عبيد الله ابن محمد بن أبي الخير القاضي، وأبو الكرم محمد بن أبي رشيد بن أبي القاسم بن محمد الأنصاري السكري، ومحمد بن محمد بن محمد بن غانم بن أبي زيد المقرئ محرر السماع، ومثبت أسامي القوم، وصح لهم ذلك ببلد أهل السنة أصبهان بمجالس آخرها في صفر سنة خمس وسبعين وخمس مئة، جعلهم الله تعالى من الصالحين بحق النبي محمد وآله وصحبه ﵊.
