- Khurwasta – Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad
The shaykh, hadith authority, and upright Qur’an reciter—one of the last survivors of the senior scholars. His full name is Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥārith al-Iṣbahānī, nicknamed al-Mujallad, popularly known as Khurwasta, and also called Abū al-Fatḥ.
Birth: around the year 425 AH.
He studied under Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Fādshāh, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAṭṭār the Qur’an reciter, Abū Bakr ibn Rīdhah, Aḥmad ibn Ḥasan ibn Fūrak the man of letters, Hārūn ibn Muḥammad al-Nānī, ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Rabbih, Abū Ṭāhir ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm, and a number of others.
He possessed a copy of al-Mustakhraj ʿalā Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim by Abū al-Shaykh, which he transmitted from Abū Saʿīd al-Qurqūbī (1) on his authority, and he also owned the Maghāzī of Ibn Isḥāq, which he had heard from Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm.

(1) The autograph reads al-Qunawi, which is incorrect; Tarikh al-Islam gives the correct form al-Qarqubi, both qafs vocalised with damma. The nisba refers to Qarqub, a town near al-Tayyib between Wasit and the districts of Ahwaz. As stated in al-Ansab, 10/108, this Abu Said is al-Hasan b. Ali b. Sahlan al-Qarqubi, an inhabitant of Isfahan known for his piety and uprightness. He received hadith from Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. al-Saigh, Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. Jafar b. Hayyan (misprinted as Habban), and others. Abu Muhammad Abd al-Aziz b. Muhammad al-Nakhshabi transmitted from him. Al-Samani records in his Mujam shuyukh: “Abu Said al-Qarqubi, resident of Isfahan, a righteous shaykh devoted to the sunnah, heard from Abu Shaykh his work al-Mukhrij ala al-Sahih. He died in Isfahan while I was still there, before my departure, on Friday at prayer time, 26 Shaaban 434/1043.”
(2) Al-Tahbir, 2/142, notes: “The Kitab al-Maghazi of Muhammad b. Ishaq b. Yasar, through Abu Tahir b. Abd al-Rahim, from Abu Shaykh, from Muhammad b. al-Husayn al-Tabraki, from Muhammad b. …” (text breaks off).
