221 – Ibn Badrān, Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Badrān ibn ʿAlī *
The shaykh, imam, Qur’an reciter, and ḥadīth transmitter Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Badrān ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥulwānī al-Baghdādī, the reciter, who was known as Khālūh, was a righteous, devout man, expert in the variant readings and possessed of a lofty chain of transmission.
He mastered the Seven Readings under Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Ghālib and ʿAlī ibn Fāris al-Khayyāṭ.
A number of students recited to him, among them Abū al-Karam al-Shahrzūrī. He himself heard ḥadīth from Abū al-Ṭayyib al-Ṭabarī, the judge Abū al-Ḥasan al-Māwardī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Shabāna al-Dīnawarī, and Abū Muḥammad al-Jawharī, and al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥumaydī selected narrations from him.
Those who narrated from him include Ismāʿīl ibn al-Samarkandī, Ibn Nāṣir, al-Silafī, Abū Ṭālib ibn Khuḍayr, the preacher of Mosul Abū al-Faḍl, ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Kulayb, and others.
Ibn Nāṣir said: “A righteous shaykh, but weak; his ḥadīth is not relied upon, for he had no real expertise in ḥadīth.” (1)
